The Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation, in association with Ernst & Young LLP, is offering three (3) scholarships in honor of Fred Rogers, the creator and long-time host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

The scholarships are intended to support and encourage aspiring undergraduate and graduate students to pursue careers in children’s media and further the values and principles of Fred Rogers’ work.

Who may apply and how does one apply?


The scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students (Masters or Ph.D.) of accredited colleges or universities. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment—through coursework or experience—to any combination of at least two of the following fields:

• early childhood education
• child development/child psychology
• film/television production
• music
• animation

Applicant must have the ultimate goal of working in children’s media.

Particular attention will be given to applicants from inner city or rural communities.

Hostelling International Student Travel Club scholarship

On behalf of the Southwest Texas Council of Hostelling International USA, the Hostelling International Student Travel Club is pleased to announce a $1,000 travel scholarship available to travel club members for the Spring-Summer 2010 terms.

Applicants must:
Demonstrate a strong desire to experience other cultures
Use the scholarship to supplement travel expenses between January and August 2010
Be enrolled undergraduate or graduate students at The University of Texas at Austin for the Spring 2010 semester
Be between the ages of 18-30
Be a member of the Hostelling International Travel Club.

The James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photographers

Founded in memory of James Alan Cox, a television photojournalist, The James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photographers aims to provide financial support to student photographers of high school and college age. Through a variety of funding, including equipment purchases and scholarships for college and technical school classes, the foundation’s mission is to expand educational and developmental opportunities for student photographers demonstrating interest, talent and financial need.

Type of Awards:

  • Five (5) Digital Cameras will be awarded to five (5) high school students.
  • Five (5) $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to five (5) college or technical school students. Four awards will be for video work while one will be for still photography.
College or technical school students applying for these scholarships must have completed one year at a recognized college, university or professional school, and have taken courses in photography or photojournalism. Both high school and college-age students should have at least one semester of school remaining at time of award.

American Copy Editors Society Scholarships

College juniors, seniors and graduate students who have demonstrated an interest in and aptitude for copy editing have until Nov. 15 to apply for several scholarships awarded each year by the ACES Education Fund, an affiliate of the American Copy Editors Society.

The top award, for $2,500, is named for Merv Aubespin, a former president of the National Association of Black Journalists, a longtime champion of copy editors and, as the chairman of the Human Resources Committee of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in the mid-1990s, the "godfather" of ACES.

The other four awards are for $1,000 each.

The scholarships are open to students who will be college juniors, seniors or graduate students in the fall, and to graduating students who will take full-time copy editing jobs or internships. Applications will be evaluated by a panel of five experienced copy editors.

George J. Mitchell Postgraduate Scholarships

We are now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 George J. Mitchell Scholarships.

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship is a national competitive fellowship sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance. The Mitchell Scholarship, named to honor the former U.S. Senator’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community. Twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: academic excellence, leadership, and a sustained commitment to service and community. The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend.

Scholarships for Student Leaders (National Association for Campus Activities)

One means by which the NACA Foundation demonstrates its commitment to the development of professionals in the field of campus activities is through providing scholarships to undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities andmade significant contributions to their campus communities. The Scholarships for Student Leaders Program, established in 1985, was created through donations to the 25 For 25 Drive, a silver anniversary fund-raising project of the NACA Foundation.

Deadline coming fast: Markley Scholarship National Association for Campus Activities

The former NACA (National Association for Campus Activities) South Central region established the Markley Scholarship in 1983. The scholarship is named for Larry Markley, the acknowledged founder of the former NACA South Central Region. The scholarship is to be used for educational purposes, such as tuition, fees and books. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and honor involved students who have made significant contributions to the NACA Central Region and are located in the former NACA South Central Region. Up to two scholarships may be awarded annually.

DEADLINE
Materials must be received in the NACA Office by Sept. 1.

CRITERIA
A committee will select individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Are strongly involved in and contribute to NACA Central
  • Demonstrate continued potential in the field of student activities
  • Are involved in and contribute to the field of student activities and/or student activities employment
  • Are involved in and contribute to other organizations
  • Are classified as a junior, senior or graduate student at a four-year school in the former NACA South Central Region (AR, LA, NM, OK and TX), or are classified as a sophomore at a two-year school in the former NACA South Central Region
  • Have a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative grade point average
  • High school students are not eligible.

NACA Foundation Graduate Scholarships (National Association for Campus Activities)

One means by which the NACA Foundation demonstrates its commitment to the development of professionals in the field of campus activities is through providing scholarships to individuals pursuing graduate work in preparation for, or to enhance, a career in campus activities. NACA offers four graduate scholarships—the Donald L. McCullough Memorial Scholarship Fund, the New England McCullough Memorial Scholarship Fund, the William E. Brattain Graduate Scholarship Fund and the Hayward M. "Skip" Daugherty, Jr. Graduate Scholarship Fund. The Brattain and the Daugherty scholarships are for students in the former Illiana (IL, IN and MO [St. Louis only]) and Great Lakes (KY, MI [area codes 231, 248, 269, 313, 517, 586, 616, 810 and 989], OH, WV and Western PA [area codes 412, 724 and 814]) regions, respectively, while the New England McCullough scholarship is designated for students in the former NACA New England Region (CT, MA, ME, NH, RI and VT).

DEADLINE
Materials must be received in the NACA Office by May 30.

CRITERIA
Graduate scholarships are awarded annually to individuals pursuing a master’s or doctorate degree in student personnel services or a related area. Applicants for graduate scholarships must:

  • Have graduated from a four-year college or university with a minimum grade point average of 2.5;
  • Be matriculated in a master’s or doctorate degree program in student personnel services or a related area, and provide proof of acceptance and matriculation into an accredited graduate school; and
  • Have demonstrated experience and involvement in campus activities and be committed to pursuing a career as a campus activities professional.
  • High school students are not eligible.

NACA Regional Council Student Leader Scholarships (National Association for Campus Activities)

The Regional Council Scholarship fund was established in 1996 in order to provide scholarships to recipients from within each of NACA’s regions. The fund, administered by the NACA Foundation, is maintained by an annual contribution from each of the regions. The scholarships, which annually vary in amount, are to be used for educational expenses including tuition, books, fees or other related expenses. Scholarships are presented at individual NACA regional conferences.

DEADLINE
Materials must be received in the NACA Office by May 1.

CRITERIA
Applicants for the Regional Council Student Leader Scholarship must:

  • Be matriculated undergraduate students in good standing at the time of application and during the semester in which the awards are received;
  • Hold significant leadership positions on their campuses;
  • Have made significant contributions to their campus communities; and,
  • Have demonstrated leadership skills and abilities.
  • High school students are not eligible.

Texas Conference for Women Scholarships

Each year, the Texas Conference for Women, thanks to the generosity of its sponsors, awards six $5,000 scholarships to outstanding female college students who balance academics, service and leadership to make a difference in the community. Scholarships are given in each of the following categories:

  • The Arts
  • Business
  • Education
  • Nursing
  • Math and Science
  • Public Service
The scholarship application must be postmarked by June 26, 2009.

Scholarship winners will be notified by September 23, 2009. Winners must be present at the 2009 Texas Conference for Women, November 12, 2009 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.
